In fact, revenue in the U.S. pharmaceutical market is on the rise, with a projected jump from an estimated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/outlook\/hmo\/pharmaceuticals\/united-states\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">$589 billion<\/a> in 2022 to $765.9 billion by 2027.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As revenue in the pharmaceutical industry goes up, so, too, should hiring \u2014 but it all depends on the specific role. For example, while jobs for pharmacists are only projected to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/ooh\/healthcare\/pharmacists.htm#tab-6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">grow by 2%<\/a> through 2031, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), medical scientist jobs should increase by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/ooh\/life-physical-and-social-science\/medical-scientists.htm#tab-6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">17%<\/a> in the same period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pharmaceutical manufacturing is one of the highest growth sectors of the industry. In a 2021 report, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nam.org\/new-nam-report-highlights-the-impact-and-importance-of-pharmaceutical-manufacturing-15052\/?stream=series-press-releases\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Association of Manufacturers<\/a> reported that pharma manufacturers employed an estimated 267,000 people in the U.S. These employers include startups, midsize companies, and giant corporations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Between 2019 and 2029, the number of jobs in the pharmaceutical and medicine manufacturing sector is estimated to grow by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/opub\/mlr\/2021\/article\/employment-projections-in-a-pandemic-environment.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">19%<\/a>, says the BLS. The bureau attributes some of that growth to increased preparation for pandemics and increased production of vaccines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&gt;&gt;MORE:<\/strong> Learn about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theforage.com\/blog\/careers\/health-care-good-career-path\">health care as a career path<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-do-pharmaceutical-jobs-pay\">What Do Pharmaceutical Jobs Pay?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the BLS, the average annual pay in pharmaceutical and medicine manufacturing stood at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/oes\/2019\/may\/naics4_325400.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">$74,560<\/a> in 2021. That\u2019s well above the average <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/oes\/current\/oes_nat.htm#00-0000\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">$58,260<\/a> yearly pay for all occupations in the U.S.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, with so many different positions in the industry, the pay ranges drastically. For example, pharmacy technicians made average yearly salaries of $35,250 in May 2021, while compliance officers earned $82,510.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-best-paying-jobs-in-major-pharmaceuticals\">Best-Paying Jobs in Major Pharmaceuticals<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Many positions in major pharmaceuticals pay more than $100,000 a year. For instance, the average base salary for a pharmaceutical scientist is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aaps.org\/career-development\/aaps-salary-survey-calculator\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">$170,000<\/a> annually, with total compensation exceeding $206,000, according to the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists. And pharmacists average around <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/oes\/current\/oes291051.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">$125,690<\/a> per year, with the top 10% making more than $164,590.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Senior executives at major pharma companies can pull in millions of dollars a year, says DynamiCoach founder Tom Cobin, a former pharmaceutical sales representative and sales trainer who now offers public speaking and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theforage.com\/blog\/skills\/presentation-skills\">presentation skills<\/a> coaching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-types-of-careers-in-the-pharmaceutical-industry\">Types of Careers in the Pharmaceutical Industry<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The pharma industry offers various career path opportunities, from research and development (R&amp;D) to sales and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theforage.com\/course-catalog\/Marketing\">marketing<\/a>, manufacturing, and science. From there one can grow into roles in marketing, training, field reimbursement etc. Other entry avenues are in market research and sales operations.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-pros-and-cons-of-pharmaceutical-careers\">Pros and Cons of Pharmaceutical Careers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, depending on the position, pharmaceutical careers have pros and cons to consider when exploring this career path.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-pros-of-pharmaceutical-careers\">Pros of Pharmaceutical Careers<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-low-barrier-to-entry\">Low Barrier to Entry<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Not every job in the pharma sector demands a Ph.D., and some enable you to start working without a college degree \u2014 particularly if you want to work in pharmaceutical manufacturing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s estimated that nearly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nam.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/ENSURING-A-HEALTHY-FUTURE.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">47%<\/a> of pharmaceutical and medicine manufacturing jobs require only a high school diploma or GED, and a little over 4% require no formal education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-career-advancement-opportunities\">Career Advancement Opportunities<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>People working in major pharmaceuticals have the potential to climb the corporate ladder, Cobin says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTalented individuals identified as having potential for advancement can rise quickly, especially if they can relocate \u2014 first to the corporate headquarters, then to a geographical area where there is a need,\u201d he says. \u201cOnce an employee is on such a career track, diversity of experience is available and encouraged.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Leal agrees that there&#8217;s an &#8220;incredible opportunity for growth for those who perform&#8221; in the pharmaceutical sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-continued-demand\">Continued Demand<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The National Association of Manufacturers points out that among about 7,000 rare diseases, just 5% have available treatments. Therefore, pharma manufacturers will keep being called upon to research and develop drugs for the treatment of those and many other diseases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-rewarding-work\">Rewarding Work<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>In many cases, people employed in the pharmaceutical industry can earn a highly desirable and extremely financially rewarding salary, coupled with benefits such as bonuses and stock options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Furthermore, pharmaceutical employees can take pride in the fact that their work helps other people, knowing the prescription drugs they help bring to market and prescribe can improve and extend lives.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;A feeling that you actually help people in need for a living&#8221; makes pharmaceutical careers &#8220;incredibly satisfying,&#8221; notes Leal, who has spent more than 30 years working in the pharmaceutical industry helping develop a &#8220;cure&#8221; for hepatitis C.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-cons-of-pharmaceutical-careers\">Cons of Pharmaceutical Careers<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-high-educational-requirements\">High Educational Requirements<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>While many jobs in the pharmaceutical industry require no advanced education, the highest-paying jobs often do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Major pharmaceuticals is a knowledge-driven sector requiring a highly skilled workforce, meaning higher-level jobs may require an undergraduate degree, with some requiring advanced degrees. In fact, Cobin believes a bachelor\u2019s degree is &#8220;essential&#8221; for many pharmaceutical professionals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-stress\">Stress<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Cobin emphasizes that the industry can be unstable, marked by sudden layoffs \u2014 making a pharmaceutical career path potentially riskier than other industries. For example, drug-making giant Novartis laid off <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fiercepharma.com\/pharma\/leaner-and-simpler-novartis-details-plans-cut-8000-jobs-worldwide\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">8,000 workers<\/a> in 2022 in an effort to slash $1 billion in costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, he says, the industry is tightly regulated, meaning workers might need to clear more hurdles than they would in other sectors. As a matter of fact, pharmaceutical and medicine manufacturing ranks among the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.perillon.com\/blog\/10-most-regulated-industries-in-the-us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">10 most regulated industries<\/a> in the U.S.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Leal notes that the &#8220;high responsibility (after all, you are dealing with a person\u2019s health)&#8221; can also add to the stress of a pharma job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-rise-of-tech\">Rise of Tech<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The increasing use of technologies like artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, and robotics might eliminate the need for some jobs in the pharmaceutical manufacturing industry, either now or in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fortunately, while robots may be replacing some of the lower-level pharmaceutical manufacturing jobs, hiring for IT and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pharmaceutical-technology.com\/analysis\/ai-hiring-levels-in-the-pharmaceutical-industry-rose-in-may-2022\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AI jobs<\/a> in the sector is on the upswing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-conservative-corporate-culture\">Conservative Corporate Culture<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>At some pharmaceutical companies, especially large ones, progress may be slow. For instance, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fiercepharma.com\/marketing\/pharmas-conservative-nature-holding-back-digital-product-launches-just-4-successful\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">report released in 2022<\/a> by Reuters Events and Graphite found that the industry\u2019s \u201cnaturally risk-averse nature\u201d is stalling digital initiatives like apps and websites.
