Krages II, who has been practicing environmental law since 1987, attorneys in the private sector can work for companies, law firms, and nonprofit organizations such as environmental groups.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Environmental lawyers in the public sector can find employment with agencies charged with administering and enforcing environmental laws \u2014 such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">U.S. Environmental Protection Agency<\/a> and state counterparts. They can also work for agencies responsible for natural resource management, like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fs.usda.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">U.S. Forest Service<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.noaa.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reid explains that a career in environmental law typically offers four distinct career tracks. Attorneys practicing environmental law can work for:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Federal, state, and local government agencies<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Businesses involved with manufacturing, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theforage.com\/blog\/careers\/energy-good-career-path\">energy<\/a>, mining, and land development<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Private-practice law firms representing individual clients<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Environmental advocacy or industry advocacy organizations&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, non-attorneys with a background in environmental science can work for governmental agencies and businesses on the technical aspects of environmental law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When it comes to the types of clients this field most often serves, environmental lawyers are generally organizational clients, such as companies and government agencies. It\u2019s less common to have individuals as clients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-environmental-lawyer-salary\">Environmental Lawyer Salary<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When people think of a lawyer&#8217;s salary, they often think of at least six figures, and with good reason. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) notes that the median annual wage for all lawyers was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/ooh\/legal\/lawyers.htm#tab-5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">$135,740<\/a> in May 2022. While the BLS does not have a distinct category for environmental lawyers, Glassdoor notes that the estimated average environmental lawyer salary is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.glassdoor.com\/Salaries\/environmental-lawyer-salary-SRCH_KO0,20.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">$81,000<\/a> per year for all experience levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-do-environmental-lawyers-do\">What Do Environmental Lawyers Do?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Many lawyers in regulatory agencies don\u2019t actually litigate the law, but they implement it, according to licensed attorney Maya K. van Rossum. He adds that practicing \u201cdoes not involve backpacking, hugging trees, or even the opportunity to make heart-felt speeches that affect global change.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-have-a-technical-mindset\">Have a Technical Mindset<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Much of the work is relatively technical, including the process of obtaining permits and determining what requirements apply to specific operations. However, Krages confirms that many successful environmental attorneys have liberal arts backgrounds and can rely on technical advisors to assist them when needed.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Is it better to take a wide variety of courses when attending law school or to concentrate on courses specifically in environmental law? Krages believes it\u2019s better to get a broad legal education.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFor many attorneys, law school will be their best opportunity to gain a general understanding of areas of laws that attorneys are generally expected to know,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s much easier once out of school to learn a specialized area of law than it is to acquire a general knowledge of several areas of the law.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, according to Reid, most colleges have a pre-law program that will advise college students on law school admissions \u2014 and college students should take advantage of those resources.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhile an environmental science degree is not necessary to be an environmental attorney, it will provide an excellent foundation for a career in environmental law,\u201d Reid concludes. \u201cCollege students should also look for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theforage.com\/blog\/basics\/how-to-get-an-internship\">internship opportunities<\/a> with government agencies that deal with environmental issues.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Interested in a legal career but not sure which type of law to pursue?
