What\u2019s more, \u201cleadership position\u201d doesn\u2019t have to mean \u201cin charge of people.\u201d You could lead a project or initiative, which requires leadership abilities. Entry-level roles often have leadership opportunities, so the hiring manager<\/a> may also be assessing how you might handle being the project manager<\/a> on an upcoming project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How to Answer Leadership Questions if You Don’t Have Leadership Experience<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If you think you don\u2019t have any leadership experience, think again! While you may not have the word \u201cmanager,\u201d \u201chead,\u201d or \u201cteam lead,\u201d in any of your job titles, that doesn\u2019t mean you don\u2019t have any leadership experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLeadership isn\u2019t a title,\u201d says Pawlik. \u201cLeadership is thinking big picture, understanding how the pieces fit together. You can learn this as a member of a team\u2026and it could be a team in a project at school or being an athlete.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, as you\u2019re preparing for your interview, think about the times you\u2019ve worked through a large problem and helped solve it. Or consider how you\u2019ve seen other people lead and what you\u2019ve learned from them \u2014 both the positive and negative aspects of their leadership. This helps you explain what you would and wouldn’t do if you were leading something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How to Answer Common Leadership Interview Questions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The most important thing about answering leadership or team lead interview questions is to be honest. Pawlik warns that recruiters<\/a> will know when you\u2019re being inauthentic. \u201cDon\u2019t fabricate some tortured story of a leadership role. Everyone can see through that. Impart what you\u2019ve observed by seeing other leaders in action and by demonstrating that you understand the mission of the company.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To help you frame your answers, Pawlik suggests creating a five-point list of the type of leader you want to be. For example, her personal leadership list includes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Being supportive:<\/strong> The team knows she is there to help them get their job done and advance in their careers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Accepting mistakes:<\/strong> Mistakes are an opportunity to do things better next time.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Everyone matters:<\/strong> Each person is important to the team\u2019s success, and no role is more important than any other.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. Everyone is human:<\/strong> Everyone on the team (including the leader) has bad days.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  5. Client-focused: <\/strong>The team should always provide the best possible service to customers because it demonstrates respect for the trust clients have placed in the team.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    After creating your list, use the STAR Method<\/a> to identify a few situations where you utilized your leadership skills<\/a>. In many cases, your answers will likely involve your soft skills<\/a>, but don\u2019t overlook your hard skills<\/a>. For example, you may talk about a time you used your data analysis skills to present a new initiative to upper management, and you ended up in charge of the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
