Why Should You Add LinkedIn Skills?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

LinkedIn skills offer more than just a list of skills you\u2019re qualified to do. The skills section is also used as a recruiting tool. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere are many ATS, CRMs, or even recruiting software and teams that skim skills to open and review profiles,\u201d says Elisa Pineda, talent acquisition and workforce development specialist. \u201cThis is especially true for larger companies who may not look directly at your profile first but do boolean searches for your skills.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Basically, adding LinkedIn skills helps recruiters and hiring managers<\/a> who are searching for specific skills find you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201c[Adding skills] demonstrates to the hiring manager and recruiters that you are, in fact, in the same sandbox as them,\u201d Matthew Warzel, certified professional resume writer and former Fortune 500 recruiter, says. \u201cWhen they see words that resonate with their role they\u2019re hiring for and in the industry they are in, they perk up. You are showing relevance. Help them help you. Use intentional skills \u2014 without fibbing \u2014 that you know live and breathe in their world.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When you add relevant skills to your LinkedIn profile, you become discoverable. And you might miss out on potential job opportunities if you don\u2019t add them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe more keywords you match for the position you really want, the more companies that will reach out to you,\u201d says Ginger Auchter, director of scientific talent at Carex Consulting Group. \u201cIt makes you more likely to be contacted about a position you may not have even been aware of (or that may not even be posted).\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That’s what happened to me! During my time at my first job, I updated my LinkedIn skills section with skills I was learning \u2014 even though I wasn’t looking for a new role. I added the top skills in my field. For someone working in content and marketing, this was search engine optimization (SEO), content management, and writing<\/a>. One day, I randomly got a LinkedIn message from a hiring manager who had found me by searching for that skill set on the platform. It turned out to be an incredible opportunity, and it led me to a job I love! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If LinkedIn skills are a critical part of the recruitment process, what skills should you add to your profile?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Job Skills<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Start with the \u201cbuzzy\u201d job skills<\/a> for your industry. These are any skills you\u2019ll need to do the jobs you\u2019re applying for. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

To find out what these skills are, look at the job descriptions of the positions you\u2019re interested in. Make a note of the hard and soft skills<\/a> they\u2019re looking for. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Typically, these skills will be in a \u201crequirements,\u201d \u201cqualifications,\u201d \u201cwhat we\u2019re looking for,\u201d or \u201cwho you are\u201d section. There may also be clues about other skills they\u2019re looking for in the specific role description. For example, if it says the hire will \u201cdevelop deep client relationships,\u201d the company may want someone with exceptional verbal communication skills<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can also look at what people in the industry have in their skills section. For instance, if you\u2019re looking at software engineering<\/a> jobs and other software engineers<\/a> have data visualization in their skills section, you can add it to your profile if you have that skill, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Transferable Skills<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Besides skills specific to the roles you\u2019re applying for, you can also include transferable skills<\/a>. These are skills you can bring from one job to another, even if they\u2019re entirely different roles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTry to attach skills that apply or can be transferred into positions you are applying for or are interested in,\u201d Pineda says. \u201cFor example, customer service can often transfer into sales positions. De-escalation can become verbal communication. Try not to use too many clich\u00e9 words. Things like \u2018good communicator\u2019 can be written creatively. It is a lot about how you write them and also what LinkedIn has available [in their skills library].\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When discussing these skills in a job application or interview<\/a>, be prepared to explain how you\u2019ll use the skill in the job you\u2019re applying for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You know you need to add the skills required for the job and transferable skills. But are some skills better than others? Including in-demand skills on your LinkedIn can help you be more hireable. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers, 90%<\/a> of employers say they’re looking for problem-solving skills<\/a> on students’ resumes. Eighty percent of employers say they’re looking for teamwork skills<\/a>, and a majority of employers (over two thirds) share they want to see a strong work ethic<\/a>, written and verbal communication skills, analytical skills<\/a>, adaptability skills<\/a>, and technical skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The skills section is a great place to show off what you know, but there are some skills you shouldn\u2019t add.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Skills You Don\u2019t Have<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Don\u2019t stretch yourself and add a skill you haven\u2019t fully developed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf you have skills listed either within your skills endorsements, or within your summary and work experience sections, it\u2019s assumed that you have a proficiency level within that skill,\u201d Auchter says. \u201cIf you only have beginning knowledge, and it\u2019s a required part of the new job, there\u2019s a strong likelihood you\u2019ll be assessed on it during the interview process. Not only will this disqualify you from that role, but hiring teams often have long memories (and good notes) and this can come across as being dishonest \u2014 which can disqualify you from future roles as well.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Non-Transferable Skills<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBeing precise and focused in the area you want to be contacted in is key,\u201d says Auchter. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For example, if you have programming skills but you\u2019re only interested in non-technical roles, you don\u2019t need to include them in your profile. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNot only do these take away the focus from the transferable skills you do bring, but in many cases you may be more likely to be recruited for these skills that you don\u2019t want to focus on, simply because it\u2019s listed in your profile,\u201d continues Auchter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Humorous Skills<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

While it\u2019s nice to remember you have fun, non-professional skills, your LinkedIn skills section isn\u2019t the place for non-work-related skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNever include skills like \u2018good kayaker\u2019 or something almost too ridiculous like that,\u201d Pineda warns. \u201cIf you are an Olympian or Paralympian, by all means, add those because that is another level entirely. Try to make it more about how those skills can transfer into a position. For example, say you have leadership skills if you led a team in a rowing club, or were voted as speaker of the athletes or team captain.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How to Add Skills on LinkedIn<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Now that you know why adding LinkedIn skills is important and which ones to (and not to) add, how do you add them to your profile?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Log into your LinkedIn and navigate to your profile page.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Click “Add profile section.”<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Navigate to “Core.”<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. Click “Add skill.”<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  5. Start typing a skill you’d like to add.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  6. If the skill appears in the dropdown, click on that skill. If it doesn’t, hit “Enter” after you’ve finished typing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  7. Hit “Save.”<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    You can also choose to include where you learned those skills. For example, you can share if you gained them at your university or during a work, volunteer, or extracurricular experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    How to Prove Credibility of Your LinkedIn Skills<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    After you\u2019ve added your skills, you\u2019ll be given the option to \u201cdemonstrate skills.\u201d This is one option to prove that you do actually have the skills you’ve listed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Should you take the time to prove your skills? You don’t necessarily need to demonstrate your skills on LinkedIn; it can\u2019t hurt, but that doesn\u2019t mean it will help, either. If the recruiter or hiring manager finds your profile because of the skills you\u2019ve listed, they\u2019ll likely expect you to demonstrate your skills in your resume, cover letter<\/a>, and interview anyway \u2014 even if you\u2019ve recorded a video or taken an assessment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n\t

    \u201cAnyone in your network can endorse you for skills, and you can also input your own skills on your profile,\u201d says Steven Waudby, senior recruiter at Delta Hire, a workforce development and hiring solutions firm. \u201cUnfortunately, it doesn\u2019t let us know your proficiency with these skills. If a recruiter or hiring manager asks you to explain your experience using that skill, you need to be able to elaborate and cite specific examples.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    If you do decide to demonstrate your skills on your profile, you have a few options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Share How You’ve Built the Skills<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    You can demonstrate skills for HR, sales, marketing<\/a>, and project management. If you choose to do so, you\u2019ll be prompted to either write in or record a video explaining how these skills are valuable to future employers. When you apply via LinkedIn, whatever you write or record will be visible in your job applications. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Take an Assessment<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    For hard skills<\/a>, you can take LinkedIn assessments to prove your skills in things like Microsoft Word and Google Analytics. If you score in the top 30%, you\u2019ll earn a skill badge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Use Your Network<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    You can also get people in your network to endorse your skills. While this doesn\u2019t necessarily add to your discoverability on LinkedIn, it can add credibility to your profile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
