When should you post your new job on Linkedin? While most people tend to post a few weeks to a few months into their role, our experts agreed \u2014 there isn\u2019t one perfect time to do it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhile news of job acceptance is usually posted very quickly, there is no \u2018right time\u2019 to update a LinkedIn profile with the job details,\u201d Lisa Dupras, career coach<\/a> at Elev8 Consulting, says. \u201cSince the job seeker is now successfully employed, they often have less urgency to update their profile. Profiles are usually updated with new position details within a few weeks, but some users take their time. Some users don\u2019t bother to update their profiles with new positions at all.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, there are some guidelines on general times to consider updating your profile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Can You Update Your LinkedIn Too Early?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Unfortunately, you can update your profile too soon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s too early if you got the offer and have yet to start,\u201d Mark Anthony Dyson, founder of The Voice of Job Seekers, says. \u201cDates and dynamics could change, and companies have rescinded offers after layoffs or hiring freezes. Timing is essential to you and your network<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead, wait until you\u2019re settled into the role and have worked for at least a few weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAt this point, you should be confident in your decision and not feel like you are going to move soon,\u201d says Andrew Fennell, former recruiter<\/a> and director at StandOut CV, a resume and careers advice service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Can You Update Your LinkedIn Too Late?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Generally, experts say it\u2019s never too late to update your profile. This is especially true if you\u2019re only updating your experience section and not making a separate announcement post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, most advise against taking too long. While waiting until after your probationary period (the first 90 days of your job) is fine, waiting to update your LinkedIn profile with a new job a full year after you\u2019ve started may be too late.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe longer you wait to update your profile, the less relevant your new job update becomes,\u201d Daniel Jorge, senior talent partner at EC1 Partners, says. \u201cAdditionally, if you wait too long to update your profile, it may be seen as a lack of attention to detail<\/a> or a lack of commitment to your new job.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you want to share that you\u2019ve started a new job in the last year, but it\u2019s been over a few months, Fennell recommends making a reflective post rather than an announcement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou\u2019ll be able to angle the same post as a \u2018looking back at my first months in the industry or role,’\u201d Fennell says. \u201cAt that stage, I wouldn\u2019t highlight you\u2019ve never spoken about the role before. Just slide into the discussion naturally, and no one will notice.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even if you\u2019re not looking for a new role (especially if you just got one you like!), adding your job to your profile can help you build your network and be visible to recruiters when the time comes for another job search. Take it from me \u2014 someone who landed one of their roles because of my LinkedIn profile! A hiring manager<\/a> found me because I’d updated my profile with my current role and reached out with a job she thought I’d be a good fit for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Adding a new job to your LinkedIn profile can help with your brand and visibility, but no one should ever require you to add a position.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNo employer can make you post your job in your experience section,\u201d Viveka von Rosen, LinkedIn subject matter expert and co-founder and chief visibility officer of Vengreso, says. \u201cYour LinkedIn profile belongs to you. The end user agreement says so!\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

How to Update Your LinkedIn Profile With a New Job<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Now you know why you should update your LinkedIn profile and when. But how do you do it? Should you make a post declaring this update to the world?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Check With Your New Company <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

First, look at your company\u2019s social media policy, Dyson warns. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSome companies frown on or discourage the use of social media. It\u2019s great if your new company and employees are active on it. If many employees do not list the company page on their profile, there might be a good reason.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After you\u2019ve done your due diligence<\/a> with the company handbook, if you can share an update, you can look to your coworkers for help. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou might reach out to your new company\u2019s marketing<\/a> team and see if they have any onboarding materials to help you with your LinkedIn profile, like background images, company or experience description templates, or other media etc.,\u201d von Rosen says. \u201cMany companies are now including LinkedIn templates in their onboarding materials.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For example, the company might have LinkedIn headers you can include in your profile or example language you can include if you\u2019re going to make a post. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Add the Job to Your Experience Section<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

To add a job to your experience section, click the \u201cadd profile section\u201d if this is the first position you\u2019re adding. If this is not the first position, scroll to your experience section and click the plus sign. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
