Historical data from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.naceweb.org\/uploadedfiles\/files\/2017\/publication\/executive-summary\/2017-nace-student-survey-executive-summary.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Association of Colleges and Employers<\/a> (NACE) states that at least 60% of students from the classes of 2013 to 2017 had an internship. However, new data from the <a href=\"https:\/\/ccwt.wisc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/CCWT_NSCI-2021-Report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Survey of College Internships<\/a> (NSCI) suggests that the number has dropped since the pandemic, reporting that just close to a fifth of students (21.5%) had internships in 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, how many students can we expect to intern in 2026?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More recent data, like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.naceweb.org\/uploadedfiles\/files\/2022\/publication\/executive-summary\/2022-nace-student-survey-executive-summary-four-year.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2022 NACE Student Survey report<\/a>, shares that more than three-quarters (78.6%) of students participate in experiential learning opportunities throughout college. However, this includes not only internships but also opportunities like co-ops and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theforage.com\/blog\/basics\/externship\">externships<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theforage.com\/blog\/news\/forage-career-readiness-survey\">Forage, in partnership with Knit Research<\/a>, 47% of students spend time working in a professional internship or career-specific work experience.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&gt;&gt;MORE:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theforage.com\/blog\/basics\/externship-vs-internship\">Externship vs Internship: What&#8217;s the Difference?<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Studies also shows that more students <em>want <\/em>an internship than those who complete one. (Check out these <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theforage.com\/blog\/basics\/generation-z-statistics\">Generation Z workplace statistics<\/a> for insights on their work location preferences.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-interns-are-more-likely-to-get-hired-but-moreso-in-some-industries-than-others\">Interns Are More Likely to Get Hired, But Moreso in Some Industries Than Others<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.naceweb.org\/about-us\/press\/use-of-career-center-tied-to-more-job-offers-more-paid-internships\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NACE<\/a>, paid interns are about twice as likely to land a job after graduation compared to non-interns. Paid interns get an average of 1.61 job offers after graduation, while non-interns get an average of 0.77.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, this employability gap is wider for particular industries and companies.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.naceweb.org\/uploadedfiles\/files\/2022\/publication\/executive-summary\/2022-nace-internship-and-co-op-survey-executive-summary.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">68% of interns get a full-time offer<\/a> from the company they interned for. But at some companies, almost all interns get a full-time offer after completing their internship. For instance, over 90% of PwC&#8217;s interns get full-time offers, according to the company&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pwc.com\/us\/en\/careers\/entry-level\/internships.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">internship page<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&gt;&gt;MORE: <\/strong>Build the skills you need to land a role at PwC with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theforage.com\/course-catalog\/CA4pBqsy4b4PdyaBP\/PwC%20US\">company&#8217;s job simulations<\/a> in audit, management consulting, and tax.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Companies in particular industries, like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theforage.com\/blog\/careers\/accounting\">accounting<\/a>, tech, consulting, and politics, are also more likely to hire people who have held internships. In particular, over 70% of employees at IBM, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theforage.com\/blog\/companies\/working-at-google\">Google<\/a>, Facebook, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theforage.com\/blog\/companies\/guide-to-working-at-deloitte\">Deloitte<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theforage.com\/blog\/companies\/guide-to-working-at-kpmg\">KPMG<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theforage.com\/blog\/companies\/working-at-ey\">EY<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theforage.com\/blog\/companies\/guide-to-working-at-pwc\">PwC<\/a>, and U.S. Congress had completed at least one internship, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.internships.com\/career-advice\/search\/to-intern-or-not-which-companies-require-an-internship\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Chegg Internships<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Internships are also helpful for landing specific roles. According to Chegg Internships, law clerks, audit associates, reporters, and analysts, are top roles that require an internship; systems administrations, insurance agents, and real estate agents are some of the least likely roles to require internship experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-other-internship-employment-statistics\">Other Internship Employment Statistics<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Students in the humanities and social sciences saw an increased positive effect in employability than their non-intern counterparts, receiving <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0272775721000601\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">26.3% more job interview requests<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>More than half (57.6%) of interns converted to full-time employees in 2022, according to NACE&#8217;s 2023 Internship and Co-op report.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-despite-calls-for-pay-equity-many-internships-remain-unpaid-nbsp\">Despite Calls for Pay Equity, Many Internships Remain Unpaid&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/08\/17\/more-than-40percent-of-interns-are-still-unpaidwhy-thats-legal.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CNBC<\/a>, 60% of interns are paid. Paid interns receive an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.naceweb.org\/uploadedfiles\/files\/2023\/publication\/executive-summary\/2023-nace-internship-and-co-op-report-executive-summary.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">average hourly wage of $20.82<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A large percentage of internships \u2014 40% \u2014 are unpaid. Unpaid internships are still legal, although there are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dol.gov\/agencies\/whd\/fact-sheets\/71-flsa-internships\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tight parameters<\/a> to when the company doesn&#8217;t have to pay an intern, including, but not limited to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>If the company determines the primary beneficiary of the internship is the intern, not the company<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If the internship ties to academic coursework and school credit<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If the intern does not displace regular employees but works under their supervision<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If the intern is not necessarily entitled to a role after the internship<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Perhaps because of the last parameter \u2014 where unpaid interns should not expect a full-time role after the internship \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.naceweb.org\/about-us\/press\/use-of-career-center-tied-to-more-job-offers-more-paid-internships\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NACE<\/a> also found that paid interns are more likely to get hired than their unpaid and non-intern counterparts. They&#8217;re also more likely to receive more job offers overall.
