Finance is typically a highly lucrative career path \u2014 even in entry-level roles. Yet it can also be stressful and demanding, requiring long hours, late nights, and fast-paced work.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you think finance is the right career path for you, how can you land a role in the field? We took insights from top companies and finance professionals to create a guide on how to get into finance with no experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-get-an-education-and-build-the-right-skills\">Get an Education and Build the Right Skills<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The first key aspect to landing a job in finance is building the skills and knowledge you need to enter the field. While you\u2019ll learn more on the job, there are a few prerequisites for landing the role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-get-a-degree-in-finance-or-something-related\">Get a Degree in Finance (or Something Related)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Most finance jobs require at least a bachelor\u2019s degree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zippia.com\/finance-professional-jobs\/demographics\/#degree-level-types\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Zippia<\/a>, the vast majority (77%) of finance professionals have a bachelor\u2019s degree. Some general key finance skills include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Financial modeling skills<\/strong>, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theforage.com\/blog\/skills\/dcf-valuation\">DCF valuation<\/a>, leveraged buyout (LBO) models, merger &amp; acquisition (M&amp;A) models, and sensitivity analysis \u2014 these are particularly foundational for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theforage.com\/blog\/careers\/investment-banking\">investment banking<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theforage.com\/blog\/careers\/private-equity\">private equity<\/a> roles<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theforage.com\/blog\/skills\/what-is-microsoft-excel\"><strong>Microsoft Excel<\/strong><\/a><strong> skills<\/strong>, including complex formulas, pivot tables, macros, and financial functions like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theforage.com\/blog\/skills\/npv\">net present value (NPV)<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theforage.com\/blog\/skills\/internal-rate-of-return\">internal rate of return (IRR)<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>PowerPoint skills<\/strong> for creating compelling pitch decks and client presentations<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Financial statement analysis<\/strong>, including the ability to read balance sheets, income statements, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theforage.com\/blog\/skills\/cash-flow-statemen\">cash flow statements<\/a>, calculate key ratios, and identify trends<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Industry-specific software expertise<\/strong>, including Bloomberg Terminal, FactSet, Capital IQ, QuickBooks, and Sage<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Data analytics and visualization skills<\/strong> using tools like Power BI, Tableau, or Python<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Knowledge of key performance indicators and metrics<\/strong> such as earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theforage.com\/blog\/skills\/ebitda\">EBITDA<\/a>), return on equity (ROE), return on assets (ROA), working capital ratios, and industry-specific benchmarks<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy number one [skill] on the list is the use of spreadsheets for financial planning, budgeting, and forecasting,\u201d says Iqbal Ahmad, founder and CEO of Britannia School of Academics and certified accountant (ACCA) and management accountant (CIMA). \u201cThough it\u2019s a very basic skill to acquire, the great thing about it is that it\u2019s a lifelong skill that can be used in a multitude of roles, not just for financial planning. As an employer, I will list down the use of MS Office tools as a prerequisite for most office-based jobs and will require demonstration of this skill for any finance-related job.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ahmad also notes that soft skills like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theforage.com\/blog\/skills\/analytical-skills\">analytical skills<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theforage.com\/blog\/skills\/problem-solving-skills\">problem-solving<\/a> are critical \u201cas most finance-related roles require understanding of complex information to solve problems,\u201d he says. \u201cAgain, as an employer, I get the candidates to attempt both verbal reasoning and numerical reasoning tests as part of the recruitment process \u2014 and recall attempting many such assessments when I was applying for finance-related jobs after my graduation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-consider-what-finance-role-is-right-for-you\">Consider What Finance Role Is Right for You<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Finance is a broad career path with a variety of different applications.
