Lauren Campbell: Gaining Experience with Big Legal Firms

Lauren Campbell head shot

“My dream is to eventually qualify as a Corporate Lawyer”

With a strong passion for Corporate Law, Lauren is aiming to complete her Master’s in Corporate Law (upon completion of the SQE) and get more experience in the area. She took an interest in the field due to “the variety of work you can be dealing with…  [and how] it is nice to see the business grow.” Along with the variable work experience, she enjoys being able to showcase all of her different skills “like interacting with the clients, organizing things, and conducting research.”

Through her time working as a Legal Apprentice with South London Legal Partnership, “[she] experienced different areas of work such as Dispute Resolution, Property Law, Commercial Law, and Social Care Law.” At the same time, she was working towards completing the CILEx Certificate in Law & Practice. Before this experience, she worked within International Markets at Deloitte to gain corporate experience. Currently, Lauren is advancing her career through working as a Locum Paralegal and working towards completing her qualifications.

“I found Forage quite exciting, as I work full-time and I study as well,  so I like that you didn’t have to complete it all at once- I did one or two pieces during the week so that it was more manageable”

Lauren found Forage when trying to find more experiences in law and chose to take the White & Case Virtual Experience Programme. The program allowed her the opportunity to pursue an internship outside of working full-time, “the main way Forage has helped me is that it has given me experience at firms that I might not have had the opportunity to gain an in-person work placement, especially with being so busy completing my Apprenticeship.”

“The Programme taught me skills that I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to develop and also gave me the opportunity to discover what I like and do not enjoy so much.” Gaining more experience and figuring out your passions while discovering your career path is vital to finding the correct career for you. Lauren also appreciated that the Forage programmes gave her, “more insight into different areas of law”, complementing her Legal Apprenticeship. Insight into these big companies was a big factor in Lauren deciding to complete the experience.

“I would advise students that no matter your background, you should always take advantage of and make the most of every opportunity given to you”

Lauren has taken many opportunities in her educational and professional careers and urges others to do the same. She says it is important as, “even things like virtual placements that you don’t think much of are going to give you an insight into different areas of law, varying cultures of law firms, and how different firms operate as a whole- all of which are vital to understanding when applying to different vacancies.” Having this type of insight is valuable as you can judge if you would be a good fit for the company’s culture and allows you to understand the type of environment that would allow you to thrive.
